The king wanted to create "a new Rome", and to accomplish this ambitious goal, he called upon a number of Italian artists for their help, such as Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio.
The luxury and elegance of the royal apartments, as well as the splendid gardens, made the Palace of Fontainebleau one of the favourite residences of French and international sovereigns and emperors; dozens of monarchs have dwelled within its walls, the most famous of whom being Henri IV, Charles V, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Napoleon and many more.
The palace still fascinates visitors today. Discover the royal apartments, Marie-Antoinette's boudoirs, the galleries, the chapels, the courtyards and the gardens. The palace has over 1,500 rooms and is home to a collection of ancient furniture, as well as works of art dating from between the 6th and 19th centuries.
